Björn Eskofier

Prof. Björn Eskofier is the Head of the Machine Learning and Data Analytics Lab at Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuernberg (FAU), working in the fields of machine learning and signal analysis for wearable computing systems with a focus on sports and health care.
He studied Electrical Engineering at the Friedrich-Alexander University (FAU) Erlangen-Nuernberg (Germany) and completed his PhD in Biomechanics in 2010 at the University of Calgary (“Application of Pattern Recognition Methods in Biomechanics”). In 2011, he became assistant professor for Computer Science in Sports (an endowed professorship of the adidas AG) and later in 2017, became full professor for ‘Digital Support Systems in Sports and Health’ within the Heisenberg-program of the German Research Foundation (DFG). He has authored more than 260 peer-reviewed articles, submitted 5 patent applications, started three spinoff startup companies and received several medical-technical research awards.
In 2016, he also was visiting professor in Dr. Paolo Bonato’s Motion Analysis Lab at Harvard Medical School and in 2018 also was a visiting professor in Sandy Pentland’s Human Dynamic Lab at MIT.
